The materials included in this kit have been developed by the Nursing Home Workplace Violence Prevention Working Group, a collaboration between the New Brunswick Nursing Home Association (NBANH), the New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU),  WorkSafeNB and the New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association (NBCCSA).

Beyond making use of the tools in this kit, please take advantage of all training opportunities and encourage/enable your co-workers and staff that you manage to do the same.

Working with Dementia: Safe Work Practices for Caregivers

Created and developed by WorkSafeBC, the below videos and guide are meant to be an initial step in raising awareness of strategies when caring for someone with dementia; they are not intended to be a comprehensive look at this issue.

Videos

This series of six videos describe how to care for people with dementia.  The introductory module provides general information on dementia.  The remaining modules use enactments to portray situations that caregivers may encounter when caring for a person with dementia.  They show caregivers how to respond to similar situations in order to say safe and support the person with dementia.

Module 1 - May I come in?- How to approach residents

Module 2 - I want to go home!- How to distract and redirect

Module 3 - Only fools rush in- Stop and assess

Module 4 - It's okay to walk away- When doing all the right stuff doesn't work

Module 5 - Bath time- Easing the stress

After viewing each module, engage in a discussion using some or all of the suggested guide points.  Some of the questions include a list of possible answers, while others are left open ended. Discussion guide

UFirst!™

Take advantage of this free online tool available from the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.  This training develops a common knowledge base, common language, common values, and a common approach to providing care for all residents/clients and in particular those suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. - UFirst!™ is recommended for all levels of staffing and any volunteers who may come directly in contact with residents.  Highly recommended for all frontline staff.

Me & U-First! - These 8 modules are a wonderful introduction to understanding responsive behaviours.  Designed so that the user can access at anytime and advance through the modules at their own pace. link to modules - To enhance this training organizations in the province of New Brunswick may want to add a 1/2 day onsite or virtual classroom session to practice skills learned when completed the modules using real life case studies available through the NB Continuing Care Safety Association. CPI non-violent crisis intervention

It is recommended With a focus on prevention, the core training program equips staff with proven strategies for safely defusing anxious, hostile, or violent behaviour at the earliest possible stage.  The focus is on preventive techniques and practicing a progression of non harmful holding skills.  This is currently a two day course.  Only available for in-house training at this time.  Please use the below contact form to book or make further inquiries.  Recommended for all levels of staff and volunteers dealing directly with residents.  Highly recommended for Code White teams and frontline care staff.

NBCCSA Resident Behaviour training

This course is a comprehensive program designed specifically for NB Nursing homes.  It combines online and in-house training with a focus on sustainable options for ongoing training.  The focus is delivering training in your organization with a synergistic approach to blend with current best practices and improve the quality of care for residents and the safety in delivering that care for staff.  Recommended that homes with limited resources start training with organization wide managers.  This is currently available in a three or two day in-person course (not including online prerequisite training).

This course focuses on:

• Team building (Team charter, what is bullying and what it isn't?, roles and responsibilities)
• Reduction of anti-psychotic medications
• UFirst! (including P.I.E.C.E.S.™ with real-life case scenarios)
• Physical non-violent crisis intervention
• PEACE (recognizing and responding to elder abuse)
• Managing resident and family expectations
• Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Laws and regulations
• Sustaining staff training.

Course information

In this kit you will find:

Roles and Responsibilities documents for boards of directors, management, workers and residents and their sponsors. Conduct agreements attached to each Roles and Responsibilities document to be signed by the respective parties. Posters to place in your nursing home. Pamphlets promoting the first phase of this project to raise awareness about violence in nursing homes and promote the message that “Violence is NOT part of the job” of health care workers. “Safety Talks” cards with scenarios, discussion points and questions to consider around various topics relating to violence prevention in nursing homes. A flow chart with steps to follow in the event of a violence incident.
