Violence Prevention – Together We Care
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November, 2016
FREDERICTON, N.B. – Nursing home staff from across the Province will be wearing purple bracelets during the month of November to show compassion for all those who have and are experiencing violence, whether in their homes, at work or on the street. It also signifies a commitment by the wearer to take measures to do their part in reducing and preventing incidents of violence in nursing homes as well as provide support to those involved if a violent incident does occur.
November is recognized as Violence Prevention month and as part of its continued efforts, the Nursing Home Workplace Violence Prevention Working Group has expanded upon the previously released Nursing Home Prevention Toolkit to include the Purple “Violence Prevention” Bracelet campaign designed to create empathy and support; Dementia Care DVDs as an educational for staff, families and volunteers caring for people with Dementia; as well as other training recommendations
The toolkit is the result of an ongoing initiative by the Working Group, a collaboration of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes (NBANH), the New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU), the New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association (NBCCSA) and WorkSafeNB to identify, develop and share training and resources to help reduce incidents of violence in nursing homes.
“Together we Care” is the theme for this year’s launch and in keeping with the toolkit design to support resident-centered care and staff safety, it also emphasizes the inclusion of residents, volunteers, boards, resident sponsors and families as active participants in reducing the number of violent incidents in nursing homes.
The complete Nursing Home Violence Prevention Toolkit as well as other resources can be found at: http://www.nbccsa.com/new-brunswick-nursing-home-violence-prevention-toolkit?mid=901 Hard copies of the kits as well as the bracelets and dvd’s have been distributed to all nursing homes across the province.
